The history of the Catholic Church as well as issues surrounding the Holocaust will be discussed as part of the Social Studies curriculum.

Technology is integrated throughout the curriculum in accordance with our Acceptable Use Policy. Students have supervised filtered access to software installed on the school's local area network (LAN) as well as to resources available via the Internet. Students will learn basic Microsoft Word, Powerpoint, and Excel skills while completing projects for all content areas.

Assessment

Trimester grades will be calculated on a weighted average of tests/projects 30%, classwork 35%, quizzes 20%, and homework 15%. For Second Grade students, the marking code consists of a set of performance indicators specific to these grade levels as follows:

(O) Progress is Outstanding - Student comprehends and consistently and independently applies grade level concepts, skills and strategies.

(G) Progress is Good - Student comprehends and is beginning to apply grade level concepts, skills and strategies.

(S) Progress is Satisfactory - Student is just beginning comprehending grade level concepts, skills and strategies.

(N) Progress is Needed - Student has difficulty comprehending grade level concepts, skills and strategies.

Missing, late, or incomplete assignments, and reports/projects will be accepted one day late and reduced to a starting grade of S-Satisfactory. In the 3rd marking period, no late work will be accepted unless due to an absence. Class work missed due to absence is to be completed and returned within three school days. If you wish to pick up work for your child when absent, please the office to request assignments before lunch.

Parents/guardians are notified of missing, late, or incomplete assignments on the interim progress reports and as otherwise warranted throughout the trimester. Assignment pads are required for all students. Homework assignments are available on our school website at www.sacred-heart-school.org for your convenience.

Academic Honesty

Any student suspected of or caught cheating or assisting any other student in cheating, will be liable to a reduction in grade to a maximum of zero credit.

Whenever the work submitted by a student is clearly that of the parent, whether in whole or in part, the teacher may assign zero credit to the assignment. Parents should be aware that assignments are specifically designed to assess the student's ability to complete the task without undue assistance.

Classroom Rules

Students are expected to abide by the school's disciplinary and uniform policies. All students are asked to be in school on time and ready to start work when the bell rings for morning prayers at 7:50. All students are highly encouraged to ask questions and participate in classroom discussions. All communication in our classroom is expected to be respectful and supportive. Each student should always do their best and be proud of their accomplishments. All students will be treated with courtesy and respect by their teacher and fellow classmates. The hands-off policy is in effect at all times. At no time may students strike or otherwise harm other students, even in play. Students should be prepared for each class subject and have all textbooks and in class each day.

Consequences and Rewards

Classroom rules will be enforced, whenever possible, using positive reinforcement. Individual students will earn special privileges and activities.  We will also work together as a classroom community to earn group rewards such as free time and special games.

Occasionally inappropriate or disruptive behavior will need to be addressed further. Consequences breaking classroom rules are as follows:

1.       Warning

2.       Five-minute recess time-out

3.       Recess detention (parent is notified)

4.       Referral to Principal-after school detention

The hands-off policy is strictly enforced. Any student violating this policy, regardless of motivation, will receive automatic recess or after school detention.

Requests for Conferences

Parents may e-mail teachers directly through the Sacred Heart School website for an update on their son/daughter's academic progress, for information on homework assignments, or to request a conference. Parents will receive a response within 2 school days provided e-mail is received before 2:00pm. Matters requiring immediate attention should be addressed through a phone call. Conferences are only available by appointment from 2:30pm-3:00pm.
